Prescott High School To Have Lock-In Prom

Published Wednesday, April 28, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

Friday, April 30, will mark the beginning of a new era for the PHS Prom.

Because of safety concerns by many in the school and community, students voted last fall to have a lock-in prom.

There are serious concerns about substance abuse and inappropriate behavior on prom night. Many accidents occur in the nation at this time of year. PHS is trying to encourage participation in supervised activities for its juniors and seniors.

Students will continue the traditional grand march at the Nevada County Courthouse at 7:00 p.m.

At 8:00 the students and their dates will enter the west doors of the high school building for the first ever lock-in prom. They will be required to remain on site until the finale at 10:30.

Tickets will be required for entry and to be included in the door prize drawings.

There will be an abundance of finger foods and soft drinks served in one large room, with tables there and throughout the hallways and lobby. There will be photographs made in the media center and movies in one room for those who don't care to dance.

The lobby will be transformed into a glittering ballroom with columns, chandeliers, a fountain and lights everywhere. A variety of music will be played for the students to dance or just enjoy the music. CD's will be given away during the dance.

Again this year, there will be a coronation of a Prince and Princess from the junior class and a King and Queen from the senior class.

Door prizes will be given out between songs. These have been donated by local businesses, industries, churches and individuals. Several cash prizes as well as gifts and certificates have been donated. There will be a 19-inch color television given away by the junior class at the close of the prom.
