Skills Contest Planned At Sports ComplexPublished Wednesday, May 2, 2001 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Prescott Parks and Recreation Department will host the Toys-R-Us Skills Competition at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at the James Johnson Sports Complex. This event is open to boys and girls ages 7-14, who attend Prescott public schools. The four age groups will be: 7-8; 9-10; 11-12; and 13-14, with boys and girls competing together. The age will be determined by the birth date as of July 17, 2001. Children will be judged in three events. First will be hitting a baseball from a tee, then fielding a ground ball and throwing it home with speed and accuracy determining the score. The third event is timed base running from second to home. The winners of each age group will receive a ribbon along with the top three in each age group with the highest combined scored in the three events. Local winners will advance to the state championship, to be held May 19, in Pine Bluff. State winners will have the chance to compete regionally at The Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, home of the Texas Rangers, on June 10.
