The Bluff City School reunion will be on Saturday, May 5, at noon in Prescott. Here are some happenings from the year 1955. In April there was a fish fry for all men of Nevada County over the age of 70 sponsored by the Prescott Lions Club. The polio vaccine had just been approved and children all over the county lined up for their polio shots. Many of you probably remember Mrs. Max Kitchen, the county health nurse. When we saw her around the school, our arms would just automatically start hurting, because we knew that it was time for another shot. Do you remember the 4-H Conservation Camp held at the Bluff City nursery back in those days? Boys from all over the county ages 10-16 attended the two-day camp and camped out on the grounds of the nursery. They were instructed to bring their lunch for the noon meal, plus three eggs, two pounds of potatoes, a knife, fork, plate, cup, spoon, toothpaste, towels, soap and bathing trunks. They received instruction in soils, forestry, nature study, gun safety and driving safety. Total expenses for the two day event was one dollar. Paul Adams was the nursery superintendent at that time. In August of 1955 the first set of triplets born in Nevada County in 50 years was born to a Bluff City couple, Donnie and Clara Sims. They were delivered by Dr. Charles Hesterly. His grandfather, Dr. S. J. Hesterly, had delivered the first set 50 years earlier, but two of those died due to the primitive medicine at that time. A thought: "Depend on the rabbit's foot if you will, but remember that it didn't work for the rabbit." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
