Kiwanis Team Wins Spelling Bee

Published Wednesday, May 2, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Prescott Kiwanis Club is buzzing about their big win at the SWADC Learning Centers seventh annual spelling bee.

Barry Barber, Mike Phillips and Glen Vasser showed everyone how it is done.

Barber said that the Kiwanis plan to keep the traveling trophy. This won't be easy with such tough competition. Sandra Jones, Donna Marlar and Debbie Alice from the Prescott Elementary School gave them a hard run for the trophy.

While all teams showed great spirit and support, the Prescott- Nevada County Chamber of Commerce took home the spirit stick. Of course with Joyce Gibson (whose R's are always silent), Carrie Nivens and Penny Richards on the team they were a cinch to win.

The other teams were: Bank of Delight: Kent Hendrix, Dorothy Nivens and Charlotte Coleman; Fish Nest: Mona Harris, Camilla Baker and Dixie Clary; Upsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma: Teresa Ragsdale, Amanda Roberson and Linda Carlew; Nevada County Day Service Center: Herb Morrow, Shannon Morrow and Doris Niemeyer; and Prescott Lions Club: Dr. Alan Fox, Mary Johnson and Joan Stuard.

Darrell Tidwell opened the program and providing wonderful entertainment throughout the night. Ron Wright was the pronouncer. The judges were Jeanie Taylor, Jon Chadwell and George Cornelius. SWADC expressed it appreciation to all the participants and to those who helped

Door prizes were a fabulous camouflage vest donated by Oliver's One-Stop; a rose plant from Seasons, two value meals from Hardee's; a case of mixed pies from Fly Wheel Pies and four pizzas and a family order of bread sticks from Pizza Hut.

"SWADC Learning Center is grateful to all the people and business of Nevada County who continually uplift and support our efforts in the field of Literacy," a spokesman said.
