National Day Of Prayer Is Thursday

Published Wednesday, May 2, 2001 in the Gurdon Times

Gurdon's observance of National Day of Prayer will be Thursday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Gurdon Primary School gymnasium.

The purpose of this observance is to pray for God's blessing on this community, state and nation. The group asks that all pray specifically for our local government, education and civic leaders as well as for the churches.

Our nation has a rich heritage of nationwide prayer dayseven pre-dating the founding of this nation. The Continental Congress called for a day of prayer in 1775 as it sought direction from God. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln made an appeal to the divided nation to pray and fast.

President Harry S. Truman in 1952 signed a law passed by Congress to establish an annual National Day of Prayer. This law was amended by Congress in 1988 to designate the first Thursday in May as the official date each year.

All the local churches invite you to attend. For more information call 353-3804.
