As April comes to an end and May begins, the activity level around Prescott is picking up.

According to Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, Saturday, April 28, will be a busy day in town.

It beings with the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast from 6:30-10 a.m. at Prescott Elementary School, along with a silent auction. Proceeds from this event will be used to help fund the club's yearly honor banquet.

At 10 a.m., the Artesian Arts League is sponsoring a poetry reading at the Whistling Gopher. Local and area poets are encouraged to bring three of their favorite poems to read, or just come and listen. Refreshments will be served.

From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., residents of Oak Grove are having a fund raiser at the Oak Grove Community Center. They will be selling barbecue plates to help raise money for the center.

Then, at 6:30 p.m., is the annual Ila Upchurch Banquet, at the McRae Middle School cafeteria. This year's featured speaker is Congressman Mike Ross.

On May 3, she said, there will be a community coffee at the Ila Upchurch Community Room sponsored by the Prescott Alternative Learning Center. The coffee will be held from 9:30-11 a.m.

May 16 sees another coffee, this one at Alliance Insurance, also from 9:30-11 a.m.

Then, on May 22, there will be a retirement party for Betty Cloer at the revenue office in Prescott. The party will begin at 10 a.m. Cloer had been with the revenue department for 23 years.

Finally, on May 24, the annual Business and Industry Appreciation Golf Tournament and Dinner will be held at the Prescott Country Club.

The tourney will be a four-man scramble, with tee time being 12:30 p.m., following lunch at 11:30 a.m.

A barbecue dinner will be held after the tourney from 5-7 p.m.

Limited space is available at the event, which is by invitation only.

From there, June opens with the 14th Annual Chicken and Egg Festival.
