The Office of University Relations/Admissions at Henderson State University has announced that Jeremy Means, a senior at Gurdon High School, has been awarded the academic success scholarship for this fall.

Means is the son of Sandra Shurtleff.

The scholarship may be offered to high school graduates who have an ACT composite score of 21-23 or 990-1060 re-centered SAT, or the salutatorian of his high school class, according to Vikita Hardwrick, director of university relations-admissions. It is equivalent to $500 per semester and is renewable for four consecutive years, provided that the recipient maintains a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and completes 28 hours each academic year.

Several from Gurdon will be receiving their degrees Saturday, May 5, at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia. Approximately 325 undergraduate and graduate students will be marching in the university's 111th commencement ceremony.

Graduating from Gurdon with a bachelor's degree are Teresa Lynn Jester, Teri Lean Dillard and Donald A. Sporer.

Ruby Jean Henry of Gurdon will receive her master's degree.

Elizabeth Ann Moseley, an instructor in the Department of Nursing, will provide the faculty charge at the University's commencement exercises at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium.

The ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. In the event of rain the ceremonies will be held in the Wells Athletic Center: the Ellis College ceremony at 10:00 a.m., the School of Education at 12:00 noon, and the School of Business at 2:00 p.m.

Melanie D. Wilson of Gurdon is a member of the Arkansas Epsilon Chapter of the Alpha Chi Honor society at Henderson State University.

This honor society annually invites candidates for membership from among the top ten percent of the junior and senior class.

To become a member Wilson must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.60. The Henderson chapter inducted 58 members.

Brandi Escalante, a student at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, has been inducted into the Gamma Beta Phi National Honor Society. Gamma Beta Phi recognizes and encourages excellence in education to promote the development of leadership ability and character in its members.

Students invited into member ship in the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society must be committed to excellence in education, to good character and to service. The student must be enrolled in a program leading to a bachelor or graduate degree, must have completed twelve credit hours and have a scholastic ranking within the top 15 percent of his or her class.
