March Rainfall Over 5-Inches

March was a wet month, according to local weatherman John W. Teeter.

He said the area received 5.17 inches of rain during the month, while the normal rainfall amount is 4.80 inches. This meant the region got 0.27 inch more than usual.

And, because January and February were also wet months, the area is more than a foot above normal for the year.

Teeter said the norm for this time of year is 13.45 inches, while 25.62 inches has fallen. The surplus is 12.17 inches.

Davis Benton, Cale's meteorologist said the south part of Nevada County received 6.03 inches of wet stuff in March.

Benton and Teeter agreed it rained 12 days during the month, with Benton saying this is about twice the norm for March.

According to Benton's figures, the south part of the county has received 22.81 inches of rain to date, also almost double the norm.

Teeter said the largest single day rainfall total was 1.56 inches on March 12.

Interestingly, while it rained almost every other day during the month, there were no weather watches or warnings posted.

Teeter said there was thunder between 7-8 p.m. on March 11. "I guess this is what is called dry thunder' since it produced no rainfall."

The most unusual weather event of the month, Teeter said, was the dense fog on March 29, from 6-9 a.m. "I don't recall fog of this density before.

The old saying is March is in like a lion and out like a lamb," he continued. "March 2001 was more lamb than lion."

The average daily temperature for March was 59.8 degrees. The warmest temperature Teeter recorded during the month was 77 degrees on March 23. The low for the month was 30, on March 10-11.

April is another month filled with the possibility of severe weather, usually producing several thunderstorms and showers, Teeter said. "We'll wait and see what happens."
