GHS Band Earns Excellence RatingPublished Wednesday, April 11, 2001 in the Gurdon TimesThe Gurdon High School band recently participated in the Region III concert and sight-reading contest. These two contests are done the same day. In the concert portion of the contest the band earned a rating of excellent. In the sight-reading portion they earned a rating of superior, the highest rating you can achieve. The directors are very pleased with the continued progress of the band and the consistency of achieving high ratings and the ability to perform more difficult literature at a high standard. Band students are having a fund-raiser along with the Gurdon Band Boosters Club in the very near future. They will be selling candy bars for $1 each each. Profits will be used to pay for solo and ensemble expenses, Jazz Band contest and end of the year awards banquet and party. "Thanks so much to the community for your continued support," Alan Wimberly, the band director, said. Band events for the remainder of this school year are as follows: Jazz Band will play for the Gurdon Senior Adult Center Wednesday, April 11, at 11:00 a.m. End of the year band concert will be held Thursday, May 10. Gurdon Rotary and Band Boosters auction to benefit band camp scholarships will be held Saturday, May 12. High school band banquet will be Tuesday, May 22.
