Two May Be Added To CommissionREBECCA S. COOPERPublished Wednesday, April 4, 2001 in the Gurdon Times The Gurdon Water and Sewer Commission may have two new members if they are approved by the Gurdon City Council at the April 9 council meeting. Glen Hughes and Jim Vance have both been approved for recommendation by the current remaining commissioners for the positions. This will fill the one long vacant seat on the commission and the seat recently vacated by Danny Paull. A third seat will come open at the end of April. Long time commissioner Bill Dulin will relinquish his seat due to retirement plans. Harold Hurst praised the work Dulin has put in over the years and he'll "hate to see him go." The department will be interviewing applicants as soon as possible to fill the machine operator's job coming open. The commissioners motioned to began the employee search quickly to provide the department temporary extra help and to aid in the training of a new employee. Application for funds for a generator has been prepared for ready use when one is found. The funds totaling $13,167 will mostly pay for the purchase, which is estimated to range $14,000 or more. The commission motioned for specs to be drawn up for the bidding process. Partial requirements for this purchase include the need for single phase and three-phase operation. "We need to get something big enough," Hurst said, adding it needs to be one around three cylinders. "The booster stations run on butane and are single phase. Should we need the generator at one of the booster stations, we could pull it down there." "A diesel should last longer," Jim Hatley said. Hurst told the group FEMA would have paid for one during the December ice emergency, but there wasn't one to be found. Hurst has asked Jim Burns with the Office of Emergency Services to search out any possible grants or aid for the remaining purchase price. Unusual as it is the department has money belonging to someone else. On one of the earlier job orders G&S Trenching went bankrupt, the commission was told. The department was asked to address the payment for one job number in combination for G&S Trenching, in care of Hughes Supply Company. When this was done one check for $2,270 was never cashed. Farmer's Home Administration wants this account closed. The department has the money put into a cash deposit until someone claimed it. Commissioner Don Morehead expressed concern, "Is this the only one we have like this?" "First State Bank has the account and on the account is the original job order number," Hurst said. "Yes, this is the first I've seen like this." The commissioners reviewed the cash deposit slips and other vital information. Conversation developed over the convenience and competitiveness of the local banks. Then the meeting was adjourned. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
