COOL SEASON ANNUALS

Each fall many producers throughout Nevada County plant different varieties of cool season annuals. Among the most popular cool season annuals planted are ryegrass and wheat. Many times a producer will ask which variety of ryegrass is the best.

Tuesday, April 10, producers will have the opportunity to see four different varieties of ryegrass plus wheat and oats all growing side by side. The varieties planted at this site include Marshall ryegrass, Ribeye ryegrass, Gulf annual ryegrass, Passerel ryegrass, wheat, Bob oats, and feed oats. Each variety was planted on the same date and has been fertilized the same.

April 10 from 10:00 a.m. until noon the Nevada County Cooperative Extension Service will host a short program at Kevin Sanford's farm located on Nevada County Road 32 (the Landfill Road). Larry Sandage, forage specialist for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, will be on hand to discuss the uses of cool season annuals.

To prepare for spring spray applications we will take time to review the proper method of calibrating a boom and cluster nozzle sprayer, following the cool season annual program.
