County To Get More Disaster FundsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 28, 2001 in the Gurdon Times Clark County is one of 13 counties in Arkansas that will receive federal help from the flooding of Feb. 14. According to a release from Rep. Mike Ross's office, he and other members of the Arkansas delegation in Washington, D.C., were able to obtain assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help with the floods from the recent storms. "The storms and flooding in February," Ross said, "caused extensive damage throughout my district and other parts of the state, while many of these communities are still trying to recover from last winter's devastating ice storm. I'm pleased to see these counties receive assistance from FEMA to help them continue their long-term efforts to repair and rebuild." In the Fourth Congressional District, which Ross represents, the counties eligible for FEMA assistance are: Bradley, Clark, Columbia, Drew, Hempstead, Hot Spring, Lincoln, Miller, Nevada and Union. Other counties eligible for help are: Prairie, White and Franklin. The disaster declaration allows public assistance for the state and local governments for repair and replacement of disaster-damaged public facilities. The declaration also includes funding from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to help state and local governments for actions to prevent or reduce long-term risks to live and property from natural or technological hazards. All 75 counties in the state are eligible for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Additionally, the delegation of Ross, Vic Snyder (from the second district), Marion Berry (from the first district) and Asa Hutchinson (with the third district) announced the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Arkansas has received Emergency Watershed funding for two projects. These projects are in the second and third congressional districts. Van Buren received $200,000 to stabilize a landslide resulting in the failure of a sewer line and threatens more than 300 homes in the area. Pulaski County got $100,000 to help with debris cleanup from the Feb. 24, tornadoes. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
