Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, April 28, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

We feel as though spring has sprung at CMS. The students have really enjoyed being outside after lunch. With all of the construction going on at our campus, our students have had to make part of the parking lot their play area.

The two basketball goals are very popular (future NBA stars). The benches are appreciated so much. Maybe if the weather continues to be nice, we can make definite plans of making the campus an area that the students will enjoy.

Progress is in the making with the field house, concession stand, and football field. The CMS gym seems to be just about ready. Mrs. Downy's GT/reading class was moved into her new room Wednesday. She must be delighted to not be the 'roaming' classroom anymore. We are happy for her, just waiting for the invitations for open house, Mrs. Downy!

The CMS Student Council assembly was conducted Wednesday. The candidates for office for the school year 1999-2000 made their campaign speeches. Words are difficult to express just how great those speeches were. I would say without any doubt that it would be difficult to find 30 people to stand before an audience of about 275 and speak with as much confidence as those candidates did.

Now the campaign is off and running. Campaign signs, banners and posters are in the making and being posted for display. The voting will be May 3.

The candidates for sixth grade representatives are Crystal Card, Carolanne Duke, Ashley Floyd, JoLee Jester, Callie King, Jessica Puckett, Frank Smithey and Daniel Stroder.

Candidates for seventh grade representatives are Katie Barbaree, Christina Daniels, Kiffany Hill, Christa Hopson, Jessie Livingston, Ashley Powell and Lezlee White.

Candidate for eighth grade representative is Becky Lee.

Candidates for parlimentarian are Taylor Pace and Alye Smith.

Candidates for treasurer are Aaron Charles and Tashi Dickens.

Candidates for secretary are Allison Anderson, Nicole Fallin, Felicia McPeak, Lakeshia Quarles and Kanei Russey.

Candidates for reporter are Krissi Davies, Sean O'Connell and Natalie Tarpley.

Candidate for vice president is Jonathan Gonzales and for president is Lynsey McKenzie.

Three representatives can be elected from each grade. It will be a very interesting campaign.

Citizen students for the month of April are fifth grade, Jennifer Watson; sixth grade, C.J. Stroder; seventh grade, Jessica Giles; and eighth grade, Jenise Jackson. These students will be taken out to lunch with Mr. Alexander.

Well, many eighth graders recited the Gettysburg Address even though they never thought they would be able to when the assignment was first given to them. It is such a wonderful pleasure to witness accomplishments of this type.

Our hearts were saddened to hear of Ashley and Kim Hulan's grandmother's death. Out thoughts are with both students.

We have been made aware of the tragic car accident involving students from GHS. Our prayers are for them and their families.

Our secretary, Linda Gayle Hogue, was surprised with a wonderful potluck luncheon on Tuesday. Just saying thank you for what you do for us!

Thanks for the support you give us as we make those Classy Moments at Cabe Middle School.
