Supporters For PHS Athletics Are Vital

Published Wednesday, March 21, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune

If you have seen these people working a concession stand at a local basketball, baseball, or softball game and the Parks and Recreation peewee basketball program, or have seen the booster business sign hanging over their heads, you have probably supported the athletic department at Prescott High School.

The Prescott Athletic Booster Club reorganizes each year before football season begins. The club's purpose is to support all athletes, cheerleaders and athletic programs for each sport offered at Prescott Public Schools. Through fund-raisers the club is able to purchase equipment, awards and support special activities for the athletes to show support.

The club will purchase end of season individual awards and host an athletic banquet to honor each athlete and their families. It is scheduled for May 1. Athletic jackets have already been purchased for those athletes lettering in a sport. Ads are bought in Hooten's Football Bookazine yearly to show support for the Curley Wolf football program.

This is all managed through fund-raisers. Football T-shirts and decade mugs were sold as a fund-raiser this past football season. Booster members were assisted by the high school coaches in providing a half time three-point shooting contest at home basketball games, which gave a little extra half time entertainment for fans.

There are many things the club does to support its programs with the funds raised.

A meal was provided for the Curley Wolves on their way to the regional basketball tournament last month. Nutritious meals were provided by the booster club, with help from the elementary school lunch room staff, for the football players before every home and away game this past season. Members and other supporters served the pre-game meals to the players with added encouragement and support for the upcoming game. Members were spotted after dark on several occasions in August painting wolf paw prints on all streets leading to Prescott High School.

When Wally Wolf, the school's mascot, got the mange the booster club came to the rescue to assist in the purchase of CurlE Wolf.

Seventh grade football equipment was found to be old and unsafe this past season. The booster club donated money to help the athletic department buy all new equipment for that program.

When Prescott High School has athletes chosen to participate in the all-star games the booster club buys ads in the program, to show support of those all-stars.

Booster members can be found in high school basketball, baseball, softball and track concession stands almost any night of the week.

To show support for Prescott's future athletes members operated a concession stand at the peewee basketball games this season as well.

Plans are being made to award a college scholarship to one graduating female athlete and one graduating male athlete with each scholarship totaling $500. (See separate article.)

To gain community support the club organized a Booster Business' program this past spring. Businesses donating to the program were given a "We Support Prescott Athletics " sign to be placed in the windows of their business to show support. A big booster business sign was also printed listing all booster businesses.

The sign hangs at all athletic events showing, not only Prescott fans, but visiting fans those businesses supporting the athletic program. A list was also printed in the football program. Businesses will be asked to continue their support this year. Booster Club members will be visiting the Booster Businesses within the next few weeks asking for their continued support. Booster businesses will be given free tickets to the athletic banquet, which includes a meal.

Everyone is invited to support the athletic program through membership. Membership fees are $5 per person. Members are invited to attend monthly booster club meetings and become involved in decision-making, brain-storming and fund-raising activities.
