Cell Phones Being Collected By ChurchPublished Wednesday, March 21, 2001 in the Nevada County PicayuneEach day more than 5,000 women are assaulted by their partners. More than one in three Americans have witnessed an incident of domestic violence. Approximately 42% of female murder victims are women who have been battered by a husband or boyfriend. These are the sobering facts about domestic violence in America today. But, you can help do something about it. First United Methodist Church in Prescott is joining with Alltel Communications in the Call to Protect' program against domestic violence. The goal of the program is to provide domestic violence victims with wireless phones that will give them security and quick access to law enforcement in the event that emergency assistance is needed. First United Methodist Church is collecting old cell phones, whether they are in good working condition or not functioning at all. All phones will be refurbished and put in the hands of women's shelters for distribution to domestic violence victims. Many women, children and families will benefit greatly, because they will be able to get emergency help at the touch of a button. Join the fight against domestic violence by donating any old cell phone you no longer use. First United Methodist Church is located at 125 West Second North in Prescott next to Bud's Auto Parts. Collection will continue through April 8. For more information contact the church at 870-887-2441. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
