David C. 'Big Hammer' Ross

David C. Big Hammer' Ross, 64, of Carlsbad, N.M., passed away Friday, March 16, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Ross was born Wednesday, June 10, 1936, in Gurdon to Robert Pete' Ross and Lennie Floyd Ross. He grew up in Arkansas. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Ethel Ruth Kreeman in Winterhaven, Calif., on Feburary 13, 1960, and moved to Arizona and then Pennsylvania. In 1963 he moved to Artesia nad later Farmington, N.M., and eventually moved to Carlsbad in 1976. He worked for Southwest Potash and later Amax, which later became Horizon Potash. He then went to work for Mississippi Chemical. David was an avid outdoorsman and also a good cook. He was known to help those in need.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Ruth Ross of Carlsband; three sons, David C. Ross II of Las Vegas, Nev., and DeWayne Ross and Derek Ross both Carlsbad; one daughter, Lisa Ratliff of Carlsbad; two sisters, Nettie Reddin and Ola Dale Dodgen both of Arkadelphia; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 20, at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ed Kneeland of Church Streeet Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial was in Carlsbad Cemetery under the direction of Denton-Funchess Funeral Home of Carlsbad, N.M.
