Oak Grove NewsLULA Q. KENDRICKPublished Wednesday, March 14, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune We got plenty of rain Sunday. We had a wonderful day at New Bethel AME Church. Our pastor preached Sunday morning and Rev. E. Montgomery preached Sunday evening; his choir really did sing good. He pastors at Mt. Vernon AME Church. It was our Sunday school annual program. We had an election of officers for the Oak Grove Civic League Tuesday night. The officers are president, Leo Hollman; vice president, Lula Q. Kendrick; Secretary, Eula Allen; and treasurer, Henry Loe Gulley. We need more members to attend. Those attending the meeting Tuesday were Herbert Coleman, Leo Hollman, Henry L. Gulley, Ardell Johnson, Benora Box, Erby C. Williams, Milton Lowe and me. We have a tutoring program started, which is an after-school program. Teachers are Ardell Johnson, Eula Allen and Sherry Bailey. It seems to be going pretty good. Cana AME Church is having its Women's day program Sunday, March 18, at 2:30 p.m. There will be a speaker from Dallas, Texas, Missionary Tessie Scott. She is a real good speaker. There will be a color rama program at Bethel AME Church Saturday night. It is sponsored by Sis. Gloria Young. Rev. Lessly Banks is the pastor. I visited Girtie Blake last week and she is doing fine. Her doctor said she could go home, but she doesn't have anyone to stay with her. She is really sad. Gena Burnell fell last week. Her daughter said she is doing fair. She stays with her daughter, Gloria Young. Her husband, Grady Burnell, is in the nursing home. Let's pray for the sick and shut in. Pray for me, I am having a time with the flu.
