Seniors in Nevada County schools can now apply for a scholarship through the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce.

However, any senior wanting to apply has to hurry as the deadline is Friday, March 16. There will be two scholarships of $250 each to be used for tuition, books or room and board.

The requirements are: the applicant must be a senior at either Prescott, Emmet or Nevada high school, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5, though those with GPAs of 3.90 or better will be given preference.

The student must be planning on attending either a two or four year college or technical school, and submit two letters of recommendation. One of these letters must be from a teacher or counselor, and the other from a person in the community or church.

Additionally, the applicant must write a paragraph detailing their career goals.

Those receiving the scholarships will have the money forwarded to the financial aid office at the school they will be attending.

The application includes parents names and mailing addresses, high school being attended, school to be attended, ACT score or the time planned to take the ACT, GPA, graduation date, number of family members living at home and whether or not the student applying is employed and if so, where.

Extracurricular activities are included in the application process, with students being asked what activities, organizations or clubs they have been involved in and offices held, along with volunteerism, awards and honors received and work done in the community and church.

The completed applications should be returned to the counselor at the high school being attended by the student.
