Published Wednesday, May 5, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

A day of prayer will be celebrated across America tomorrow (Thursday, May 6). In Clark County a special observance will be held on the courthouse lawn from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m.

The Clark County National Day of Prayer Task Force invites everyone to be with them as they join millions of Americans across the country in expressing their dependence upon the God whose grace has guided this nation's growth and progress since its birth more than 200 years ago.

This year's National Day of Prayer the 48th consecutive observance of the occasion will be a very important day in the life of this century.

Ever since John Hancock signed the congressional order establishing the first Day of Prayer in 1775, national days of prayer have been a traditional part of the American experience.

The modern observance was established by law when a resolution was unanimously passed by Congress and signed by President Harry Truman in1952. In 1988 the law was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, designating the first Thursday in May as the annual day of prayer. This year's theme is "Light the Nation with Prayer."

Clark County's event, will be filled with prayer for government leaders, churches, schools, families and other important topics by the following local ministers: Gary Turner, Third Street Baptist Church in Arkadlephia; Barry Smith, Beech Street Baptist Church in Gurdon; Rick Mays, Trinity Temple Assembly of God in Arkadelphia; Sister Teresa Daly, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Arkadelphia; and Gail Perkins, First Presbyterian Church in Arkadelphia.

Llewellyn Terry of Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Arkadelphia will deliver a special message on prayer and its importance to this nation's present and future. There will also be the presentation of colors by the Arkansas National Guard, special music by the Arkadelphia Christian School, along with several more of Clark County's finest singing talents, greetings and proclamations by local and county officials.

Feel free to take your family this day is planned for every American citizen.
