Readers Encouraged At CMSPublished Wednesday, March 14, 2001 in the Gurdon TimesCabe Middle School reading teachers, Carolyn McClure, Florida Briscoe and Jean Smithey, have been using several different methods as motivational techniques with the reading students. For every accelerated reading (AR) quiz a student is able to pass with 85 percent or higher score, his or her name is placed in two drawings this year. The first drawing was held in December. Local businesses helped make this motivational incentive possible. Gifts or money were donated by First State Bank, Horne's Funeral Home, McKinnon Monument Company, Cabe Land Company, Anthony-Higgs Lumber Company, Griffin Logging, International Paper Co., Nick Downey, Forget-Me-Knot and M&M Enterprises. The teachers drew names and the students received a gift of their choice. Another drawing will be held this spring. AR students has a reading goal that they must strive to reach each nine weeks. In January the reading teachers took about 45 students who reached their reading goal on a field trip to the skating rink in Caddo Valley. The students had a wonderful time and are anticipating their next field trip. The reading department of Cabe Middle School received a $3,000 grant from the Dawson Educational Coop to maximize equity among all students. It provided an extra computer for Kay Downey's seventh grade classroom. This has eliminated some of the wait time when more than one student finishes a quiz at the same time and are needing to take a computerized quiz on their book. The grant also provided for two learning center labs, one for the resource room and one for the special education room. Grant funds were also used to purchase an audio tape library. These audio tapes are housed in Carolyn McClure's, Mrs. Florida Briscoe's and Mrs. Jean Smithey's classrooms. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
