Cossey Setting Recrod In First Season At SMUBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 7, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Andrea Cossey has been lighting it up for the Lady Mustangs of Southern Methodist University. Cossey, a freshman at SMU, played in all 26 games for the Lady Mustangs this season, starting in eight. The former Wolverette is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.6 points per game overall, but 9.8 ppg in conference action. Needless to say, Cossey is the team leader when it comes to three-pointers. As of Feb. 25 she had nailed 45 treys and was shooting almost 35 percent from beyond the arc, hitting 46 of 130 shots taken. In addition she is third on the team in assists with 59 and has averaged 22 minutes per game on the court for the entire season. She has averaged 24.1 minutes a game in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) games. It will come as no surprise to Wolverette fans to learn Cossey set the freshman record with the most three-point shots taken and made, while establishing a frosh record for most three-pointers attempted in one game. This was 11 against Oklahoma on Dec. 9. Overall Cossey is ninth in the WAC in three-point field goal percentage and three-pointers made. Cossey had a career high game against the Lady Sooners, scoring 22 points. She also tossed in 21 against Rice on Feb. 2 and 18 against Stephen F. Austin (SFA) on Nov. 18, 2000. She's hit six field goals in a game three times during the season and 14 on two occasions. Her best field goal percentage in a game came against Stephen F. Austin, when she shot 75 percent from the field. In the outing against Rice her percentage was .545. Of the 11 three-pointers taken against Oklahoma Cossey made four. Her best outings for three-point percentages also came against SFA and Rice, where the figures were 75 percent and 54.5 percent respectively. She's pulled down seven rebounds twice and had a career high six assists against the University of Texas, El Paso. She's had four assists in a game five times on the year. Against Tulsa, Cossey had a career high three steals and has stolen the ball twice each in four games. Cossey must have enjoyed playing against SFA as she had a career high two blocked shots in the game to go along with her other accolades from that contest. With the good, there's also some bad, as Cossey turned the ball over five times against Southern Illinois and has had four turnovers in three other games. She's had three fouls in a game eight times during the year. But against Hawaii, she had a career high in minutes played with 33 in that game.
