Leadership Group Visits Arkansas State Capitol

Published Wednesday, March 7, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune

Leadership Nevada County held its State Government session on February 8 in Little Rock.

Those participating met with state officials about pressing issues facing the state and the country as a whole. The day started with Gov. Mike Huckabee spending some time answering questions from the participants in the Governor's Conference Room. Later in the day the group was able to observe both the House and Senate in action.

State Sen. Percy Malone and State Rep. Sandra Rodgers introduced the group on their respective chamber floors.

The class spent time with Rodgers and with two other representatives of this district, Tommy Roebuck and Robert White, during the day as well as with Malone, who took the group on the Senate floor during the lunch recess. Lunch was at the Capitol cafeteria in the basement of the Capitol.

Secretary of State Sharon Priest and State Auditor Gus Wingfield each hosted the participants in their offices. Each shared information about how their office is conducted and the issues facing their area of work. The staff in the State Land Commission office described the process of auctioning land for delinquent taxes in the state.

After a full day the group enjoyed a meal and a movie at the I-MAX theatre near the airport. During the ride to Little Rock and back on the van the class enjoyed getting to know one another better and worked on their ideas for service projects.
