Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, May 5, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesFour high school students who went to Washington, D.C., with the Close-Up program met with the eighth graders and told about their trip on April 26. As these are former students of ours, we felt as thought it was like a 'homecoming.' Chady Calley, Brandon Gattis, Whitney Hogue and Cassi Lynn shared information with the students of what their trip to our nation's capitol meant to them. They had several pictures and pamphlets to share and the explanations of places they visited really held the audience's attention. It seems as though it was only yesterday that those students were with us at Middle School. We are very proud they were able to make the trip become reality, as it was talked about from at least seventh grade. Chady, Brandon, Whitney and Cassi, thank you so much for sacrificing two classes to visit with us and place the desire for our students to begin to plan to make the journey one day. Our hearts were greatly saddened with the news of Patrick Stone's death. Our deepest sympathy goes to his mom and dad. We are grateful that the others in the accident are doing as well as they are. All grades were informed of the danger of fire ants that we are seeing around our campus. Two people from the office of the Cooperative Extension Service had slides, models and other information to explain the danger of fire ants. Students seemed to have left the presentation with a greater 'respect' for the big mounds of ants when they see them. Lynsey McKenzie was the lucky student to have had her name drawn for the Furby given away by the accelerated reading program. Good for you, Lynsey, as she has wanted one for some time. The CMS Beta Club will be giving away Cabe Middle School shirts, Go-Devil caps and windbreakers. A drawing will be held May 14. See a club member on how to register. The cheerleaders will be giving away three Beanie Babies, Erin, Peace and Princess Di. Check with one of them for more details. Those fifth graders are really going to miss their social studies teacher, Mrs. Green. She has taken a leave of absence to have her baby. Our love and thoughts are with you, Mrs. Green. Readers, once again, thank you for your support, for your caring and great expectations of us as we continue to make those Classy Moments at CMS.
