Curley Wolves Fall In Round One Of RegionalsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 28, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's trip to the regional basketball tournament in Star City was short-lived, as the Wolves fell to Hamburg in the first round. The Lions posted a 70-38 in over the Wolves, sending Prescott to spring sports. The Wolves never really got in the game, as the Lions opened up with a 13-7 lead at the end of one. By halftime, Hamburg's lead was double-digits at 32-17, and at the end of three the score was 52-31. Wolf Coach Larry Newsom said the Lions were good up and down the line. Kevin Fulks and Justin Tidwell scored 10 each for Prescott. The Wolves were seven of 17 from the line, while Hamburg hit seven of 10. Prescott played two solid games in the district tournament, earning a berth in the regional tilt. The Wolves opened with a 63-46 win over Fouke in the first round. Both teams put seven on the board in the first eight minutes, with Prescott unloading on the Panthers in the second quarter and taking a 33-16 lead at halftime. Fouke's situation didn't improve in the third as Prescott led 48-32. Fulks paved the way with 16, while Cory Yarbrough tossed in 15 and Fulks added 14. Eric Thomas led Fouke with 14, while Chad Carter scored 13. The Wolves hit 11 of 19 free throws, with Fouke netting eight of 14. Game two saw Prescott thump Bismarck 72-46. The Wolves jumped out to a 16-11 lead after one, and were up 35-23 at the half. By the end of three, Prescott's lead had been extended to 53-35. Four members of the Wolf-pack scored in double-figures. Brandon Young led the group with 20. Keon Sockwell stepped up for 17, while Decolen Prater netted 15. Tidwell added 12. Thornton led the Lions with 20. Prescott did a yeoman's job at the line, hitting 11 of 15. Bismarck hit four of nine. Then the bottom fell out for the Wolves as the Leopards of De Queen handed them an 81-46 loss in the semifinals. De Queen jumped on Prescott early, taking a 22-7 lead at the end of one, and leading 41-20 at the break. By the end of three, the Leopards were on cruise control with the score 62-28. Sockwell had 13 for Prescott. Matt Hall led all scorers with 19, while Johnathan Neeley added 16. Again, the Wolves did well from the line, netting 11 of 18, while the Leopards were 19 of 26. The consolation game, to see who would be seeded third and fourth, pitted the Wolves against host team Fountain Lake. The home team won 57-52. The Cobras took an early lead, trying to administer the knock out punch in the first period as they led 16-5. However, Prescott fought back in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 22-19. The Wolves managed to stay close for the rest of the game, but were never able to get over the hump and take the lead. Prater paced the Wolves with 16, while Fulks scored 14 and Young added 12.
