High Winds Damage ChurchBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, May 5, 1999 in the Gurdon Times High winds from Monday's storms, April 26, resulted in a church auditorium being destroyed in the Trinity community. According to Clark County Judge Floyd "Buddy" Manning, the highest winds occurred in the western part of the county, where a tree fell on the Trinity Baptist Church. The tree destroyed the church's auditorium, crushing it under its weight. He said the fallen tree measured 12 feet around. The church's insurance company paid off the claim for $30,000, with the pastor discussing the options with the parishioners on whether to rebuild the auditorium or not. Otherwise, Manning said, most of the downed trees were in the woods, with relatively few blocking roads. There was no evidence of a tornado, he said, but the straight line winds were enough. No one was injured as a result of the storm. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
