Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, September 15, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesFlags are flying! Yes, CMS has the flags! When you drive by Cabe Middle School Monday through Friday, take a look at the new flag poles as they proudly display the U.S. and state flags. This was a moment that has been waited on and looked forward to for a long time (just ask Ann Clingan). The day now begins with the students standing for the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, as directed by sixth grader Allison Anderson and seventh grader Taylor Pace. The intercom provides the means for this to be heard throughout our school. Just seeing the football players remove their helmets, while on the practice field, and face the flag as it was being raised by Lynsey McKenzie and Robin LaMay, was a "sight to treasure." The CMS Student Council plans to do some landscaping in the area where the flag poles are, but that will be delayed for a while. We are back on the regular school hour schedule and it seemed as though time went by so fast. The students did not seem to notice that they were in a class for a longer period of time than they had been since school started. Pep Rallies! The junior high cheerleaders really know how to make a pep rally lots of fun and loads of noise. The fifth and sixth graders have walked away as winners of the classes showing the most team spirit! Okay, seventh and eighth, are you going to let them get by with that? The band adds so much to the pep rallies and we do appreciate Alan Wimberly for helping to make a fun time even more enjoyable. Although, he is a senior this year, Brandon Gattis was once one of ours and we are so sorry to learn that he is facing surgery an his knee and will not be able to play football his senior year. Brandon was hurt during practice just before the first game. Just want him to know that we are thinking about him. You too, Mom. Micheal Testa, an eighth grader, was selected as junior high football player for the week. Josh Uchetman was the ninth grade selection. Selections are made by the teachers by observing how the team members act in class, hallway, during lunch, and just simply during the school day. Jill Plyler was selected as the junior high cheerleader for the month. We are proud of all of our cheerleaders. They're all winners. Thanks to their Moms and sponsor, Linda Bullard, for all of the hard work they have put into helping to make the program such a success. (You, too, Dads.) Plans are in the making for a fall carnival at CMS. The proceeds will be used to purchase library books and playground equipment for CMS. Students are getting excited about it and we will keep you informed about the date, as we extend an invitation to you. So watch for the date which will be announced later. Well, we see Joshua Jordan moving around pretty good on the crutches he needs for a period of time. It is good to hear other students ask to carry his books for him. Hey, those junior high football players played a great game against De Queen. Although the score was 18 to 12 in their favor, our team really played a great game. Cevin Laster returned the first kickoff for a 87-yard return. Way To Go! Sparkman, look out, as the team is ready to win next Thursday! Thanks for being concerned about us and especially for voting for our school to be included in the Gurdon city limits. Just continue to keep in touch with us as we make those Classy Moments at CMS.
