I wonder when the latest census figures will be released. I would like

to know if we are growing or declining.

I found an article written in 1960 that lists the population for Prescott and Nevada County in various years. In the first census of Prescott in 1880, the population of Prescott was

1,253; in 1890 it was 1,287; in 1900 it was 2,005; in 1910 it was 2,705; in 1920 it was 2,681; in 1930 it was 3,033; in 1940 it was 3,177; and in 1950 it was 3,960. My 1999 Arkansas

road map gives the population of Prescott as 3,673.

The population of Nevada County in 1880 was 12,959; in 1890 it was 14,832; in 1900 it was 16,609; in 1910 it was 19,344; in 1920 it reached a peak at 21,934; in 1930 it was 20,407; in 1940 it was 19,869; and in 1950 it was 14,781. My 1999 road map gives the county's population as 10,101, less than half what it was in 1920.

I just thought I would throw this out there so you can see the trends. I will leave it to the analysts to explain all this.

I also found an old news column from our neighboring community of Terrapin Neck, written by Mrs. Ballard. She called it Tales from Terrapin Neck. I need a catchy title like that for this column. Any ideas?

I was amused by a report in 1960 from one of the county's home demonstration clubs. They had a reducing club and reported in the paper how many pounds were lost and how many pounds were gained that month. They even told who lost the most pounds. The amusing thing

was that after the weight report, they mentioned that assorted cookies were served for refreshments.

Historians tell us that women used cosmetics in the Middle Ages. For that matter, women in the middle ages still use them.
