A 30-year-old Hope man has been arrested and charged with first degree forgery for passing phony $20 bills.

According to court records, Kim Fore was working the counter at the Eagle's Nest in Emmet on Jan. 23, when Clinton Michael Turner came in picked up a 12-pack of soft drinks, a bag of sugar and $3.49 in deli items. He paid with a $20.

Fore didn't notice anything unusual at the time as she was backed up because the credit card machine was down.

However, the next customer also paid for his purchase with a $20, and Fore noticed the difference in the color of the two bills, as the one Turner reportedly paid with was a different color than the rest of the bills in the drawer.

She took the bill to Mike Otwell, owner of the Eagle's Nest, and told him it struck her odd as the man, Turner, was in a hurry when he left.

Otwell had noticed Turner talking to a man when he arrived at the convenience store, and recognized him as Turner. Fore, according to records, said Turner ignored the same man who tried to talk with him again as he left.

Turner was arrested on Jan. 31, charged with first degree forgery. This is a class B felony carrying a sentence of 5-20 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $15,000.
