Emmet Council Approve Budget

After approving the budget for 2000, a clean up measure, the Emmet City Council had little left to do.

However, just because there was no action for the panel to take didn't mean the council was dismissed after one item of business at its regular monthly meeting Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Emmet Mayor Dale Booker updated the council on the cleanup effort after the recent ice storm.

He said the majority of the town had been cleaned up with the entire job expected to be finished in a few weeks.

The city, though, is only working on public property as it is not allowed to clean up private property by law. Booker said landowners need to put the debris from their yard in the right-of-way so it can be picked up and be hauled off.

As of yet, he said, Emmet has received no money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the cleanup effort.

Paperwork was turned in the first week of emergency operations, he said, with the rest to be turned in one lump sum when the job is done.

People, he said, need to get the debris from their yards before the city stops its cleanup effort or Emmet won't get as much help from FEMA.

He told the council the new water well is on-line, but not programmed 100 percent yet.

The idea was for the two wells to operate one after the other. As one finished its cycle, the next time the demand was up the other well would handle the load. This way, Booker said, the pumps would last longer.

However, there are still bugs in the program as the cycling isn't working according to plan.

Booker said in the event of a power failure at City Hall only one of the pumps will run, and the computer program doesn't notify anyone of the situation so the other pump can be switched on.

Before the programmers are called back to see what the problem is Booker plans to run some test cycles to see if there are any other problems.

Also, he said, funding has been appropriated for landscaping and erecting a fence around the new well. While the groundwork has been done, Booker wants to wait until it's dry before putting the fence up.

In other business the council moved the time of its meeting to 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month to accommodate Dick Snell's schedule.

The meeting was originally moved to Wednesday because this was the only day councilman Wayne Baker could attend, other than Saturday.

The council also welcomed Brenda Carroway Sorrells as its new member.
