Prscott Man Given 10 Years For RapeBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 21, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Jeffery Hawthorne, 42, of Prescott was found guilty of rape and sentenced to 10 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. However, five years of the sentence was suspended; he was also given credit for time served in the Nevada County Jail. According to court records, on Aug. 27, 2000, Hawthorne was seen touching a six-year-old girl in a sexual manner, while a seven-year-old girl said he had put his hands down her panties and touched her. The six-year-old was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital, where the subsequent examination revealed sexual abuse had occurred. Hawthorne pled no contest on Feb. 13, 2001, on the rape charge, while the attempted rape charge was nolle prossed, because of lack of evidence. Rape is a class Y felony with a penalty of 10 to 40 years or life in prison. Along with the jail time Hawthorne was fined $500 and court costs.
