Students in two classes in the Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation (HKR) at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia recently conducted a health fair for students at the university as well as members of the community.

"I think the health fair went very well," said Dr. Ginger Hurst, assistant professor of HKR and coordinator of the health fair.

Students participating in the health fair were enrolled in either organization and administration or measurements and evaluations. The type of work the students did at the fair is the same type many expect to do once they graduate.

Ashlea Stewart, a junior from Prescott, was one of the participants, as was Melissa Fulton, a senior from Blevins.

"I thought it would be good experience for the students," said Hurst. "I've had some real good comments, and the students felt like they really learned from doing the real-world stuff."

The fair featured a number of booths and exhibits that focused on health and fitness. Exhibits included blood-sugar testing and cholesterol testing as well as test for agility, flexibility, strength, muscular endurance and reaction time.

The students agreed that the health fair was very helpful to them.

"I thought it helped in learning how to manage something of that caliber." said Landon Stevens, a senior HKR major form Edgewood, Texas, as the health fair saw approximately 250 people. "The various booths taught me a lot about different testing procedures for assessing an individual's health. I think this is something the HKR Department should continue to do. It's good for the community and for the students who participate."

Students participating in the Health Fair include the following:
