Nevada Sr. Boys Defeat Gurdon In Conference ActionBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 31, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Nevada's Blue Jays took one of three from Gurdon Thursday, Jan. 25, as the senior boys won, while the senior girls and junior boys lost. NEVADA 85 GURDON 52 Nevada never led Gurdon get in the game, as the Jays jumped on the Devils from the outset. The Devils were able to play close in the first quarter, but wound up trailing 21-15, and six points was as close as the Jays allowed them to get for the rest of the game. Both teams had problems putting the ball in the hole in the second period, and neither showed much consistency. However, halftime arrived with Nevada holding a 38-29 lead. Things improved for the Jays in the third, as they found their rhythm and began pounding Gurdon. It didn't hurt for the Devils to lose one of their starters with five fouls in the first half. By the end of three, the Jays were up 63-42 and Gurdon was forced to take quick shots and hope for the best. The Jays simply owned the final eight minutes, outscoring Gurdon 22-10. Six Nevada players scored in double figures, showing how dominant the Jays were offensively. Jamarrio Beasley led all scorers with 17 for Nevada. Jason Yarbrough followed with 14, while Reccarto King netted 13. Matthew Young scored 12, Geoffrey Box added 11 with Ronald Pearson chipping in 10. Norris Glenn was Gurdon's brightest spot with 15. K.P. Meeks added 10. The Jays were 10 of 19 from the line, while the Devils were five of 11. Nevada was deadly from beyond the arc as the Jays nailed nine three-point shots. LADY JAYS 38 LADY DEVILS 54 Nevada's offensive problems showed when the Lady Jays employed the old four-corner offense to slow the game and try to lull Gurdon into making mistakes. It didn't work well as the Lady Devils posted a 54-38 win. Nevada players would stand near mid-court holding the ball waiting for Gurdon to do something. Sometimes the standing would last 30 seconds or longer before either team moved. At other times, the Lady Jays would employ a three-player weave beyond the key hoping Gurdon's defense would lapse and they could drive the baseline. These tactics kept scoring down for three quarters of the game. Gurdon led 10-6 after one and 26-18 at halftime. The Lady Devils stretched their lead to 38-25 at the end of three, though there were spots where action was positively glacial. Gurdon's players, when the Lady Devils were on offense, looked to push the ball down court, work for a good shot and score. In the final eight minutes of the game, the Lady Jays also began increasing the pace. Unfortunately, it was a case of too little, too late. Pam Young led Nevada with 15 points. Sonia Beasley led all scorers with 16 for Gurdon, while Angela Walker added 11. Nevada was nine of 12 from the line, with Gurdon hitting five of 12 free throws. NEVADA 28 GURDON 30 Nevada's junior boys had the game won until the final seconds, when they, in effect, gave it away. The biggest problem for the Jays is they missed 11 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter. The Jays led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter of a hard-fought game. Halftime arrived with the home team up 15-11, as Nevada's defense kept Gurdon in check. However, the Jays defense slacked up in the third, allowing Gurdon to cut the lead to 22-19. The final six minutes saw the Devils outscore the Jays 11-6 and steal the win. Reco Mixon led Nevada with 12 points. DeShaun Allen and Marcell Johnson led Gurdon with nine each. Nevada lost the game at the free throw line where the Jays were 10 of 22. Gurdon hit two of eight from the line. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
