Letter: Opposes Liquor Permit

Published Wednesday, January 24, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune

I am a native of Nevada County. I was raised two miles south of Bodcaw on Highway 32, between Bodcaw and Willisville. My parents still reside there. I also graduated from Nevada High School in 1996. I am now residing in south Mississippi, but I read the Picayune each week on the World Wide Web. Thanks for providing this paper on the Web and keeping me informed.

I am writing in reference to the article published in the Jan. 17th edition, concerning the possible liquor license for a private lodge in the Bodcaw area. I would like to urge those living in this area to let their opposition be known concerning this proposal. Like Dr. Carmony, I am proud of where I grew up. I attended Bodcaw Elementary School until the consolidation of schools.

I feel that this license could very well be the beginning of trouble in this safe community. The granting of this license could "get the ball rolling" for more instances in which alcohol is pumped into the community. Yes, I know that a person could probably find a bootlegger that would give them liquor. In a small community like Bodcaw most of the residents could probably name him. However, making liquor available legally for a few "select visitors" could eventually turn into something much more major.

I care deeply about this issue and this community. The site of this lodge is only a few miles from my parents' home. I would hate for a license to be issued and for the possibility of a drunk driver to be increased. I have a father, mother, brother, sister-in-law, niece, nephew and many friends who travel this community.

If Dr. Carmony really doesn't "want to bring anything negative to Bodcaw or Nevada County," and if he truly takes "great pride in being from there," then he should take pride in this community's past...a past free from any liquor license. To the citizens of Bodcaw, I urge you to keep this community as safe and Godly as possible. Be sure to let your voice be known.
