Until the final minute of the game, it looked as if Gurdon's junior girls could pull out a win against Lewisville.

This wasn't the case, as the junior Lady Red Devils clipped Gurdon 35-27.

Gurdon's team had been hit by the flu-bug of late, with Coach Tammy Alexander unable to work the entire team at once during practice.

Still, the Lady Devils gave Lewisville all they wanted and then some.

The game opened with neither team shooting well from the floor. Gurdon scored the first points at the 4:28 point of the first and led 10-7 when the buzzer sounded.

The teams were methodical in their approach, each scrapping for the ball.

Period two opened with Gurdon again scoring first and picking up the pace somewhat.

The Lady Devils found their stroke and built a 16-9 lead before Lewisville rallied to make it 18-12 at the half.

Lewisville, having pressed throughout the first half, continued pressing, and seeing some results in the third quarter.

The Lady Red Devils stepped up their defensive pressure and looked to run whenever Gurdon made a mistake.

Lewisville reeled off the first six points of the period to tie the game at 18-18, with the squads swapping buckets the remainder of the third.

However, the score was 23-22 in Lewisville's favor when the buzzer sounded.

The squads squared off like heavyweight boxers, trading licks until the score was tied 27-27 with 2:36 left in the contest.

Lewisville scored to make it 29-27, and Gurdon was nailed with a five-second call on the ensuing inbound play, giving the Lady Red Devils the ball again.

Mental mistakes in the last minute by Gurdon allowed Lewisville to win by eight.

Haley Griffin led Gurdon's attack with 10.

LaShardea Harper paced Lewisville with 13, while Erica Dafney scored 11.

Gurdon hit one of four free throws, while Lewisville was a pitiful nine of 24 from the line.
