FOUKE 11

Published Wednesday, May 5, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

PRESCOTT 1 Prescott's final regular season game saw the Wolves take it on the chin 11-1 on the road to Fouke.

This gave the Wolves an 0-7 league mark and a 3-13 overall record for the year. Fouke was 3-3 in conference play, and had an overall mark of 17-7.

The game began well for Prescott. The first batter went down on strikes but Bullock connected for his fourth homer of the year to give Prescott a 1-0 lead.

Yates walked but the next two batters were fanned.

However, the Panthers had a big first, scoring five runs.

Batter one walked, with batter two getting hit by a pitch. Batter three singled in batter one.

A fielder's choice failed to garner the first out as a throwing error allowed two to score, while a single brings in the other runner.

Bullock fanned the next batter and induced a fly ball to his successor before an errant pick-off attempt allowed the fifth run to score. A ground ball ended the inning.

Aside from a walk to Young, Prescott's bats were silenced by K's.

The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the inning with two down. The batter doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

Consecutive walks put runners at first and second, with Bullock picking off the runner at second trying to advance to third.

Inning three was almost identical to inning two for Prescott, with Harris reaching on an error before the side was fanned.

Three more runs were added to Fouke's side of the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.

A walk, single and error loaded the bases, while a two out single scored two to make it 9- 1.

Inning four saw Young walk, one Wolf retired on strikes and two set down by way of grounder.

The Panthers ended their scoring with a pair in the bottom of the frame, beginning with a single and a fly out.

A double brought in one, while a ground out scored the second run.

McGough walked to start the fifth and was replaced by Fred Hopson on the base paths. However, with one down, Hopson was caught trying to steal and a K ended the game on the 10- run rule.

McMurry took the win for Fouke, going the distance, giving up one run on one hit. He fanned 12 and walked four in the game.

Bullock spent two innings on the hill, giving up six runs on three hits, while walking three and fanning one.

Yates also pitched two innings, allowing five runs on four hits, while walking two.

Fouke took the junior varsity game 5-3.

The Panthers, Crow said, finished the season as the fourth seed in the district tourney behind Nashville, De Queen and Fordyce. Those three teams tied for first place.

Fouke, he said, had a good team, losing three conference games by narrow margins. The Scrappers edged the Panthers 8-6, while the Leopards blanked them 5-0. Fordyce managed an 11- 8 win.

The Panthers outhit Prescott 7-1. Crow said had the Wolves offense got anything going it would have been a close game.

"Our pitchers pitched well to hold them to seven hits," he said. "The big five-run first inning hurt. Two runs in the first scored on a poorly executed run down play and one scored on a wild pick-off throw. Their run in the second scored with two outs."

In the third, he continued, a missed pop up fly could have resulted in the second out with the inning coming to an end as the next man flied out. Instead, the Panthers were able to score three runs.

"Take away the two-out runs and runs scoring on errors and it's a 4-1 ballgame," Crow said. "You can't have those mistakes against a good team like Fouke and still expect to have a chance to win."
