Bluff City NewsJERRY McKELVYPublished Wednesday, January 3, 2001 in the Nevada County Picayune Last week's news: By the time you read this Christmas will be over. I hope Santa brought you what you wanted. I'm sure most folks enjoyed family dinners and visiting with relatives. There's usually a bright side to most bad things that happen. If you had been wondering where you could get some firewood this winter it can be found just about everywherejust like manna from heaven. One big difference is that the manna melted each day when the sun got hot, but these limbs will be around until you clean them up. Funeral services for Della Marie Lampkin of Chidester were held Dec. 20 with burial at Bluff City Cemetery. Michael Sellers is home for the holidays from his military training. He had been away since August. He completed basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, and is presently undergoing further training at Ft. Lee, Virginia. I think most everyone who wanted a deer has gotten at least one. Can you imagine what a deer must have been thinking as all the timber was popping under the weight of the ice. They probably thought it was gunshots. Our neighboring town of Chidester was without power for several days. The ice was much worse further east. Have you ever read some of the "dumb" laws still on the books. In Hartford, Conn., it is illegal for a man to kiss his wife on Sunday. In Cleveland, Ohio, it is illegal for stores to sell cornflakes on Sunday. If you want to read more of these check out www.dumblaws.com. Here's an item from 1929: The boys basketball team from Chidester played the Bluff City Dragons Tuesday on the Bluff City court. The score was 16 to 8 in favor of the Dragons. Plans are for the Dragons to play Willisville Saturday afternoon on the gym at Prescott. Anyone interested in real ball games should see this game.
