Prescott Defeats Ashdown In 7AAA ActionBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 13, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Curley Wolf basketball team is having a good early season. The Wolves split games last week, beating new league-foe Ashdown 65-59, but falling to Smackover in the second round of the Southern Arkansas University tournament 73-66. PRESCOTT 65 ASHDOWN 59 The Wolves had to come back in the fourth quarter to post a 65-59 win against the Ashdown Panthers, Tuesday, Dec. 5, in 7AAA action. Ashdown jumped out to a 13-10 lead at the end of one and clung to a 27-25 advantage at halftime. The Panthers widened the margin to five points by the end of three, with the score 44-39. However, the Wolves smelled blood in the final eight minutes and poured in 26 points to snatch the win away. Kevin Fulks led the way with 17 points. He was one of four to score in double figures for Prescott. Justin Tidwell followed with 14, with Cory Yarbough adding 13. Joe Stewart chipped in 10. Fricks led Ashdown with 15, while Purtle scored 12. The Wolves converted 10 of 26 free throws, while Ashdown hit 13 of 21 from the line. PRESCOTT 66 SMACKOVER 73 At one time in the game, the Wolves led by 11, only to see Smackover's Buckaroos battle back and steal the win 73-66 in the second round of the SAU tourney. Prescott opened with a 19-14 lead at the end of one, and was up 36-31 by halftime. But, the Bucks fought back in the third to cut the lead to one at 52-51, then outscored Prescott 22-14 in the final eight minutes. Tidwell set the pace for the Wolves with 24 points. Fulks contributed 19 and Brandon Young scored 11. Jonathan Madica led all scorers with 33 for Smackover. Prescott hit seven of 10 free throws, while the Bucks were six of nine from the line. WOLVERETTES 51 LADY PANTHERS 60 Prescott's senior girls have been improving with every outing. They played a solid game against the Lady Panthers of Ashdown, fighting back from a double-digit deficit, but falling 60-51. Ashdown, though, led at the end of every quarter in the game. The score was 12-9 after one and 33-23 at the half. The Wolverettes trailed by 12, 47-35, when the buzzer sounded ending the third quarter. Still, the team refused to give up and fought to make a game of it. Sophia Dunn led the attack with 16. Brandy Jackson followed with 13, while Lateisha Heard scored 10. Prescott was 16 of 35 from the line, while Ashdown hit only eight of 20. CUBS 55 BISMARCK 27 Prescott's Curley Cubs put a serious hurt on the Bismarck Lion junior boys, whipping them 55-27 recently. The Cubs jumped out to a 16-5 lead at the end of one and never looked back. Halftime arrived with the score 23-11 in Prescott's favor, with the Cubs blowing the game open in the third by stretching their lead to 20, at 42-22. The Cubs hit seven of 10 from the line, while the Lions were three of seven. R. Smith paced Prescott with 16. Crabb led Bismarck with seven. CUBS 31 BEAVERS 46 Prescott's ninth grade squad didn't fare as well against the Beavers as their younger counterparts, as they fell 46-31. Arkadelphia led 18-5 at the end of one, pushing this to a 27-12 halftime lead. At the end of three, the Beavers were up 41-22. CUBETTES 20 ARKADELPHIA 28 The Cubettes fought the good fight, but came up a little short as they went down to the Lady Beavers 28-20. Arkadelphia led 6-3 when the first quarter ended, and 13-8 at halftime. The Lady Beavers made it 20-13 at the end of the third. Mari Delgado led Prescott with nine points.
