Emmet Enrollment At 313BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 13, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Enrollment in the Emmet School District stands at 313. Of this, 187 are in the primary school, with the other 126 enrolled in the high school. This information was presented to the Emmet School Board at its regular monthly meeting Monday, Dec. 4, by principals Floyd Pollock and Shade Gilbert. Otherwise, the meeting was business as usual. Pollock, elementary principal, said the school's Christmas program will be held Thursday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Ross Gym, with everyone invited to attend. Something the students won't find as pleasant is semester tests being Dec. 18-19. But, school will be let out at 2 p.m. each day, with the Christmas holiday break beginning Wednesday, Dec. 20, and lasting until Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001. Gilbert, the high school principal, had two field trip requests. One for Library Club members to go to the American Rose center on Dec. 19, and the other for the Oral Communication Class to do research in the Henderson State University Library and tour the campus. Both were granted. Dr. Gene Ross, Emmet superintendent, said Emmet fourth grade students did well on the Arkansas Benchmark Exams recently. This group scored in the 48th percentile in math, with the state average being in the 41st percentile. In literacy, though, they scored in the 33rd percentile. Dr. Ross said the students did better than Hope, and were on par with Prescott and Nevada at the eighth grade level, with Emmet's fourth graders doing better than all other county schools. The annual audit has been returned, Dr. Ross said, and was clean, with one exception the district needs more segregation of duties in cash transactions. However, most districts are written up for this transgression. "It's nothing new," he said. "We have a limited number of people." The district's financial balance at the time of the audit, though, was $707,000. Dr. Ross said former EHS Principal Frank Henson wants to offer another adult computer class next year. This is something he did before retiring as EHS principal. The board approved the class. It also gave the nod to four fund raising events, mostly for the Library Club. The Library Club will be holding a book fair, sell Easter brochures and Valentine's Day candy to raise money for its projects. The other fund raiser will allow Emmet's cheerleaders to sell photos with the mascot to raise money for cheerleading camp next summer. Dr. Ross presented two applications for substitute teacher. He told the board those approved in November had found other employment and were no longer available to teach. The board approved both applications. In the final order of business, the January meeting was moved from Jan. 1, 2001, to Jan. 8. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
