Published Wednesday, December 6, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

Do you have the urge to plant year round? Are your flowerbeds and yard in constant disarray from planting and transplanting? Would you like to be a Master Gardener? Applications are being taken in Nevada County for persons who want to sharpen their horticultural skills and then share their knowledge with others.

The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service is conducting the Master Gardener training program every Tuesday between January 30 and February 27. The classes are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will be held at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Arkadelphia.

Following training and receipt of the Master Gardener certification, new participants will be asked to donate 40 hours to help county Extension agents train others.

Training begins January 30 with instruction on soils and fertilizer, pesticide safety, fire ants and many other topics of interest. Other training sessions include vegetable production, home fruit production, landscaping, lawns, pesticides and their use, and irrigation.

All training will be conducted by Cooperative Extension Service professionals and volunteers. A fee of $60 covers books and other materials.

Final selection of participants will be made from applications by the Extension staff. The deadline for applying is Thursday, December 21.

For details contact the Nevada County Extension office at (870) 887-2818. There must be at least 20 people enrolled for the training to take place.
