Rainfall Tops 11" During NovemberBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 6, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Let's talk about rain, as this is what happened through most of November, or so it seemed. According to Prescott meteorologist John Teeter, the area received 11.84 inches of rain during the 11th month of the year. The normal amount if 4.43 inches, making November one of the wettest months of the year. Teeter said November was 7.41 inches above normal, and this also brought the year's total above the norm as well. The normal rainfall amount for this time of year, he said, is 44.78 inches, but 51.22 inches has fallen to date. This gives the region a surplus of 6.44 inches. Cale weatherman Davis Benton said it rained 17 days in November in the southern part of Nevada County. Overall, the Cale region received 12.50 inches during November, bringing the year's total to 45.81 inches. This, Benton said, is about 10 inches below normal. The problem, he said, is the four month period from July to October saw a total of 9.15 inches of rain in the Cale area. Teeter, though, said it rained 12 days in Prescott, with the largest single day's total being 2.62 inches on Nov. 24. The temperatures, Teeter said, was lower than normal. The average daily temperature for November is 53.5 degrees, but this year the ADT was 48.3 degrees, making it 5.2 degrees cooler per day than usual. In spite of the drenching rains, there were no watches or warnings posted during the month. Usually there are four in November. "We're ready for winter at our station," Teeter said. "Anti-freeze is in the rain gauges and we cleaned the slats of the thermometer shed. We also have our "snow board" in place, just in case." While much of the month was below average in temperature, it did reach 80 degrees on Nov. 3. The lowest high, Teeter said, was 39 degrees on Nov. 19. The mercury dropped below freezing six times during the month, with the lowest reading being 26 degrees on Nov. 21. Turning to December, Teeter said the average rainfall total is 4.60 inches, with the average daily temperature being 45.2 degrees. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
