Lions Club Auction Thursday, Friday

It's time again for the annual Prescott Lions Club Christmas auction. Merchants and individuals from Prescott, Hope, Emmet, Gurdon, Arkadelphia, Blevins, Hot Springs and Texarkana have donated hundreds of items and services to be auctioned off Thursday and Friday, December 7 and 8, beginning at 6:30 each night at the Nevada County Courthouse.

Additionally there will be entertainment and four packages from Branson, Missouri, Six Flags over Texas, Grand Ol' Opry, Elvis' Graceland, Eureka Springs, Arkansas State Park lodges, Tracy Lawrence concert and Collin Raye Festival.

There will be a number of items from the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Dallas Cowboys. There will also be an Old Mike' issue of the Nevada County Picayune as well as a Prescott centennial issue.

Admission is free to the auction. Both nights there will be drawings for cash door prizes as well as a special drawing for a Hot Springs get-a-way that includes two days and nights accommodations in a condo, free tickets to Oaklawn Race Track and Magic Springs, complimentary baths on bath house row, limo services, a trip on the Belle of Hot Springs, and dinner for two.

The auctioneer again this year is Jim Self of Hope.

Concessions will be handled by the Leo's of Prescott Lions Club.

Both nights will be broadcast live on KTPA Radio.

Thursday night, Dec. 7, KTSS TV will tape some of the auction for replay Friday, Dec. 8.

All money raised from this auction will help those in need of eye examinations, glass and hearing devices, as well as financial assistance to some in this area who need a helping hand. Additionally funds go to help Lions World Services for the Blind.

Co-chairmen for this year's auction are Rudy Preston and Gary Lewis. Others on the auction committee are Kay Hendrix, George Ivey, Dani Tamberelli, John Purifoy, Betty Thaxton, Angie McBride, Dorothy Ward, Floyd Harlow and the late LeRoy Godwin.

The Prescott Lions Club 2000 benevolence includes the following:

Purchased three exams and glasses for people in this area; donated $750 to Nevada County Rescue Unit; sponsored two children attending the Generation Next Summer Camp; paid for 21 blood test screenings for local people; presented four $500 college scholarships; gave $500 to the Bosnian Students Account; gave $20 to charter a Boy Scout troop; gave $250 to Caddo Area Boy Scout Council; gave $100 to Arkansas Children's Hospital through Log-A-Load; gave $250 to Prescott Baseball Association to sponsor a Little League team; gave $300 to Prescott Baseball Association to help with All-Star team; gave $1,200 to Lions World Services for the Blind (LWSB); gave $480 to Lions Mid-South Sight (MSS); gave $100 to Lions Leader Dogs for the Blind; contributed $325 to the PHS ninth grade cheerleaders; donated $250 to Arkansas Eye Bank and Laboratory; gave $300 to a family whose house burned; gave $50 each to Bismarck and Murfreesboro to start new Lions Clubs; paid for local residents' medication; purchased sets of Henry's Lights in memory of deceased Lions and families; donated $300 to First Presbyterian Preschool for school supply packets; sponsored a booth at the Nevada County Health Fair; gave $50 to Prescott High School Wolf Trail; operated concession wagon at Nevada County Fair; annual Lions Club Christmas auction; provided Christmas baskets to nursing homes, needy families and an assisted-living facility; provided Christmas toys and clothes to needy families; gave $50 to Texarkana Noon Lions Club; and referred a Nevada County resident for surgery to Lions Mid-South Sight in Memphis.
