Jr. Lady Go-Devils Defeat Blevins In League Play

Gurdon's Heather Griffin led the junior Lady Devils to a 41-18 beating of Blevins Friday, Dec. 1.

The game opened with both teams playing a deliberate offensive and defensive scheme, feeling one another out like heavyweight boxers.

The Lady Devils worked the ball inside to Griffin, who ended the night with 17, and led 6-4 with 3:15 left in the first quarter.

Griffin's size inside made the difference as Gurdon led 10-8 after one.

Period two opened with the Lady Devils beginning to press Blevins and force turnovers.

Early on, though, Gurdon was unable to get a shot off cleanly, but Blevins couldn't score either.

Midway through the period the Lady Devils sped the pace of the game up and began running up and down the floor. This resulted in a 14-9 lead with 3:35 left, and a 19-11 lead at the break.

All three of Blevins's points came from free throws in the second quarter.

Gurdon's girls remained without pity in the third period, as they continued to work the ball inside to Griffin, while the Lady Hornets were unable to do much of anything.

Blevins missed four free throws in a row before getting off the snide in the third, while the Lady Devils were consistent in scoring.

Gurdon built its lead to 31-14 heading into the fourth quarter, where the Lady Devils scored to get the final six minutes underway.

The Lady Devils continued forcing Blevins turnovers and turning them into points, through patient play.

Gurdon Coach Tammy Alexander, with 1:13 left in the game and the Lady Devils leading comfortably began emptying the bench.

She put in B. Griffin, the smallest player on the team. B. Griffin immediately pulled down a long rebound, then scored for Gurdon, bringing cheers from the Lady Devil fans.

Alisha Bell added nine for Gurdon in the win.

Williamson led Blevins with six.

The Lady Devils hit three of seven from the line, while Blevins could only convert six of 18 free throws.
