Holiday Shopping Can Be In GurdonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 6, 2000 in the Gurdon Times Christmas shopping has gotten off to a slow start in Gurdon, but business is expected to pick up as the holiday gets closer. For those still looking for the perfect Christmas gift, it can be found in downtown Gurdon at local businesses. If clothes are on the list, and when are they not for Christmas, then K&T's is the place to go. Karen Parker, owner, said the day after Thanksgiving isn't traditionally one of her busiest, even though the business was open. K&T offers a complete line of athletic shoes and clothing, with blue jeans always being a welcome gift. The jeans, she said, are available in relaxed fit for men and elastic sides for women. Then there's the Forget Me Knot shop, where Christmas floral arrangements are available, as are scented candles and gourmet food baskets. Custom framing is offered at the Forget Me Knot, as are bath and body products, gourmet mixes, calendars, figurines and the most popular item of all chocolate. Bill's Dollar Store has a wide variety of toys, but is out of scooters at this time. It isn't known if Bill's will be getting any more scooters in before Christmas or not. However, there are plenty of dolls, remote control vehicles, mini- basketball goals, porcelain dolls, decorative clocks, toddler activity desks, men's and women's clothing and music dancers still on the shelves. Dollar General also has a good selection of toys for children, including a bashing brawler wrestling toy the child actually wrestles. Other items available at Dollar General include prayer bears that actually say a prayer when activated, clothing and holiday decorations. Perhaps this isn't your cup of tea. Then try the Curiosity Shop, filled with antiques and collectibles, along with new and used floral arrangements. The Curiosity Shop offers depression-era glass, Tiffany glass, crystal, tea sets from Occupied Japan, primitive work, handmade scented candles, all types of figurines, carnival glass, Victorian lamps, Johnson Brothers dinnerware and treadle sewing machines. Gift certificates from $10 to $25 are also available at the Curiosity Shop. The ideas aren't finished yet. At Kuhn's Sentry Hardware, recliners and televisions are on hand for that special someone. Kuhn's offers all sorts of appliances, power tools, hand tools (for the handyman in the family), lawn and garden equipment, living room suites, and stereo equipment. Mongoose bicycles are on hand at Plyler's Hardware, in all sizes for all ages. Plyler's also has Knight muzzle loaders for the hunter in the family, along with all types of archery gear, hunting clothing, boots, knives and a bullet keychain, popular for hunters. Mom might appreciate a boot drier after dad comes in from spending a day in the woods. For duck hunters, Plyler's has remote control decoys, along with the duck calls and infra-red heaters (to warm up after the hunt). Along with all this, Plyler's has televisions, videocassette recorders, deep freeze units, stoves, refrigerators, microwave ovens, binoculars, scopes, deer stands and camp gear. Finally, "Billy Bass" the singing fish, can be purchased there as well. At Thomerson's Drug Store there are throws, pillows and framed prints for the more discriminating shoppers. Thomerson's also offers figurines, candies, jewelry, perfumes, colognes, candles, watches, frames, decorations, lava lamps (proving everything old is new again), bubble fish lamps, platters, vases, gift baskets and the popular Fitz & Floyd collectibles. So, for Christmas shopping this year, there's definitely no place like home. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
