Chamber, Complaints Heard By City Council

Busy, busy, busy is how Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce defined the last year.

Godwin told the Prescott City Council what the Chamber did in the past 12 months using a powerpoint program.

Membership, she said, has been good, and the Chamber is in better financial shape than it's been in years.

Utilizing the computer program, Godwin showed pictures from the 1999 Halloween Costume Contest, the Chambers float in the Nevada County Fair, the mural, the industrial golf tournament, Christmas on the Square, Breakfast with Santa and the Health-A-Rama.

The council members saw the Christmas parade, the Parade of Homes and the county's Christmas tree in Little Rock.

Images changed to show the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Farmer's Market, the Chicken and Egg Festival, complete with its T-shirt contest, and the congressional debate for the four Democratic candidates.

The council was told of the various organizations the Chamber is not only involved in, but members of.

"We're always adding new projects," Godwin said, "as the year goes on. We couldn't do it without the help of city workers."

There was a brief discussion about possibly starting a local chapter of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, with no decision made.

The night got underway, though, with the swearing in of Billy House as the newest member of the council. House replaces Steve Crow, who resigned to accept the position as director of the Parks and Recreation Department.

Karen Ward brought up the topic of the dog problem in the city, saying she's received more calls concerning dogs running loose in town.

"People want something done," she said.

Prescott Mayor Howard Taylor said he will appoint a committee to look into this issue at the council's December meeting.

Ward read a letter from the Artesian Arts League asking for financial assistance to purchase drapes and stage curtains.

The league, Ward read, is in the process of renovating the City Hall auditorium. The drapes, she said, will cost about $3,000.

No action was taken on this issue, as it, too, will be addressed at the December meeting.

Taylor said all of the businesses have left from the site of the new library, with the firm of B&R Construction of Arkadelphia to raze the structures in mid-December.

The architectural firm of Trull-Hollensworth of Magnolia was named to design the new library.
