GHS Class Of 1960 MeetsPublished Wednesday, November 29, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesThe Gurdon High School class of 1960 celebrated its 40th class reunion Saturday, Oct. 28, at Cabe Student Center at the Gurdon High School complex. The group enjoyed a meet and greet time from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. and then enjoyed a delicious meal catered by Allen's Bar-B-Q and Grill. Terry Hughes captivated the audience with singing and reminiscing on music from the 50's and 60's. Larry Franklin, class president, introduced the guests, Mrs. Beverly (Wells) Wilson and her husband Trevon, and Terry and Vickie Hughes. Notes and phone calls from former teachers, Betty Fielder Smart, Mildred Welch, Louise Davies, Mary Jo Moore Tanner, Grady Cathey and Mrs. Ed Sherman were acknowledged. Mrs. Beverly Wilson, who taught the class high school English, was the first speaker on the program. She surprised the group with her sense of humor as she told several of her experiences as a teacher in Gurdon Public School and Henderson State University. Each classmate introduced themselves and their spouse and gave an update of the last ten years. Updates of students unable to attend included Bobby Bear, Roy Gene Britt, Billy Roy Capps, John McCarthy, Bobby Scott, J.L. Stinnett and Leigh Ellen Waldon Hunter. Ronnie Eckert showed a video of memories. These included photos of the past of class members, the old primary and high school buildings, faculty, old movie camera films and new video film from classmate Bobby Bear. The film proved to be one of the highlights of the evening. Former classmates Gerald Hazelwood, Charles Clark Wray, Jimmy Deaton, Virginia Nash Moore, Nelda Bryant Walsh, Robert Earl Stricklin and Roger Thomas, along with class sponsor, Betty Slayton and principal Ed Sherman, were remembered with a special film tribute. Awards were presented to changed the most,' Barbara Sue Smith Sekinger; changed the least,' Linda Maud Smith Barfield; traveled the farthest,' Sharon Blythe Face from New Hampshire; highest degree,' Larry Franklin; youngest child,' James Boyce; most grandchildren,' Allen Malcom; and great-grandmother,' Linda Cagle Brown. Class members attending the reunion were Sharon Blythe Face, James Boyce, Marianne Cabe Long, Linda Cagle Brown, Rebecca Creech Cogbill, Rose Mary Dillard Andrews, Ruth Dillard Knight, Nick Downey, Ronnied Eckert, Jimmy Don Foyil, Larry Franklin, Patricia Fultz Nix, Mary Jo Harper Ward, Patsy Herron Brazil, Harry Hiett, Larry Hiett, Wanza Hughes Heard, Nettie Ruth Jester Renfro, David Kuhn, Allen Malcom, Vivian McClure Spruill, L.R. McDonald, Sue Zan Mizell, Lavonne Murphy Thomason, Maelyn Nash Pennington, Charlie Nix, Mary Carolyn Norton Williams, Jackie Overton, Joe Pruitt, Eva Mae Robbs Bullard, Ann Ross Wilson, Barbara Sue Smith Sekinger, Brenda Smith Norman, Linda Maud Smith Barfield, Thurman Smith, Jean Steed Langford, Edith Toland Hays, Ronnie Tolleson, Stanley Walters, Bobby Wells, Nancy Williams George, Perry Don Williams, Dorothy Wingfield Scott, Mary Beth Wingfield Downey, and guest Carolyn Smith Thomas, widow of Roger Thomas.
