Gurdon Rotary Helping Needy In Clark CountyBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 29, 2000 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Rotary Club will be joining forces with Arkadelphia's Christmas Store this year to help the needy during the holidays. The club's decided it would begin collecting canned goods and non-perishable items to be donated to the Christmas Store, with local and area residents in need, and who qualify, being able to apply for them. Alan Wimberly, director of the Gurdon High School Marching Go-Devil Band, originally made the suggesting saying there was a time when the band's Christmas concert required the donation of a canned food item as admission. This, he said, could be done, qualifying the statement to add it is a free concert and the donations would be appreciated. The concert will be held Thursday, Dec. 14, in the GHS cafetorium. Questions were asked concerning how food drives were done in the past, and what was required. The club was informed such drives require considerable time and effort, as businesses and industries must be contacted for donations, a collection point is needed, and lists must be gathered of those in need. Once the list is in place, and food collected, the baskets must be delivered to those in need. It was then decided to join forced with the Christmas Store, which will be open Dec. 17-20 in Arkadelphia. Along with collecting canned goods at the band concert, the club will try to set up collection boxes as Thomason's Big Star, Dollar General and Bill's Dollar Store.
