Gurdon's Lady Devils broke a four-year drought by posting a 69-46 win over arch-rival Prescott to open the 2000-2001 season.

The best part of the win was it happened in Prescott.

The Lady Devils jumped on the Wolverettes early, leading 13-11 after one.

However, this quickly changed as Gurdon began pulling away in the second quarter. Halftime arrived with the Lady Devils holding a 37-23 lead.

The onslaught continued in the second half, as the Lady Devils shut down Prescott's offense while scoring 13 more to push the advantage to 50-26.

The Lady Devils connected on 12 of 23 free throws, while the Wolverettes netted 13 of 25 from the charity stripe.

Sally Beasley led Gurdon's attack with 21 points. Vanesha Young contributed 15 to the win, with Lavonda Buford adding 14 more.

Prescott's leading scorer was Brandy Jackson with 17.

With football season having been over less than a week, Gurdon's basketball team had little time to prepare for the season.

The lack of practice showed as Prescott posted an 81-57 win against the Devils in the season opener for both squads.

Gurdon played close in the first quarter, but trailed 18-15. By halftime the Devils saw the Prescott lead in double figures at 40-29.

The situation didn't improve in the second half, as the Wolves pulled to a 61-40 lead by the end of the third.

D. Kelly led the Devils with 17 points, while Norris Glenn added 10.

Kevin Fulks was the game's leading scorer with 26 for Prescott. Justin Tidwell and Cory Yarbrough added 13 each.

Free throws were a big part of the game, as the two quads combined to shoot 81 on the night. Of these, 45 were made.

Prescott, though, spent most of the game at the charity stripe, hitting 30 of 54 free throws. Gurdon connected on 15 of 27.
