'Bagman' Helps Educate

Published Wednesday, November 15, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

The cost of handling and disposing of household trash continues to increase every year. Disposing of solid waste (household trash) is one of the more expensive services provided to citizens of this community, yet one of the most essential services.

Southwest Central Solid Waste District includes Garland, Hot Spring and Clark counties. The board of this district is responsible for proper disposal of trash that ultimately goes to the landfill. Southwest Central Board is encouraging recycling and asking all householders in these communities to participate in the program.

People tend to be set in their ways. They're reluctant to give up their old way of doing things. Therefore, it is necessary to start an educational program, beginning with children in the local schools.

In their recycling promotion Southwest Central District has created Bagman,' a cartoon character representing a bag of household trash. It is featured in a TV video. This video will be distributed and shown in all elementary schools in the district.

Elementary children will also receive printed cartoon pages to color. The coloring sheets have a message on the back for parents, explaining the importance of recycling.

Although changing old habits is hard to do Bagman' hopes to help people change for the better.
