Classy Moments from Cabe Middle School

Published Wednesday, November 15, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

History in the making. Wow, what an election. Probably everyone in the United States has remarks about the election such confusion and uncertainty surrounding the electoral vote.

Such great discussions about the election have been going on in Mrs. Clingan's classes. CNN has remained on during class time as the students have been keeping up with the recount in Florida. However, by the time you are reading this, a decision could probably have been made about the Florida vote.

The mock election at CMS voted for Bush/Cheney by a landslide. The political convention was simply wonderful. The students who portrayed the candidates delivered their speeches like they were professionals. Mrs. Cheney, (Callie King) introduced her husband, Dick Cheney, (Derek Buck). Each gave reasons why we should vote for the Bush/Cheney ticket. Mrs. Bush (Taylor Pace) had great things to say about her husband as she introduced George Bush, (Taylor Morehead). Bush certainly made it clear of his plans when he becomes president.

Mrs. Lieberman, (Natalie Tarpley) shared the interests her husband Joe Lieberman, (Sean O'Connell) has for the country and that he would make a good vice president. Joe Lieberman told the program that he and Al Gore plan to put in effect on Jan. 20.

Tipper Gore, (Katie Barbaree) had no doubt about how her husband would keep the economy of this nation in good shape as she introduced Al Gore, (Kyle Berline). Gore made it very clear that he and Joe were ready to lead this nation and needed each vote of the students.

I just wish that each of you could have seen these students. They delivered their speeches as though it was just an every day thing. They were dressed so appropriately for the role they were portraying. Derek, Taylor, Sean and Kyle had suits and ties and looked the part of a true candidate. Natalie, Taylor Pace, Callie and Katie were dressed in two piece suits or a dress. Each were just great, and they presented their candidates in such a convincing manner; they made us all very proud of them.

Voting for CMS took place Monday. The students had registered to vote 45 days prior to the election and only those who had registered were allowed to vote.

The campaign committees worked about three hours Sunday afternoon as they decorated the stage for the political convention.

The following met with Mrs. Clingan and Mrs. Buckley to get the job done and done well.' The students were Britta Halliday, Jordan Purifoy, Krissi Davies, Carolanne Duke, Sean O'Connell, Derek Buck, Marco Giles, Natalie Tarpley, Christa Hopson, Melanie Shults, Amy Stiffler, Caleb Deaton, Jolee Jester, Callie King, Taylor Pace, and Taylor Morehead. A big thanks to Carolanne Duke for bringing the delicious cookies. Without that nourishment no telling what might have happened.

We appreciate the parents who took time out to attend the political convention. It means so much to the students when they see parents attending various activities at CMS.

Citizen students have been recognized at Cabe Middle School. they are Monica Reeves, fifth grade; Corey Daniell, sixth grade; Cassy Purifoy, seventh grade; and Britta Halliday, eighth grade. Good job.

Cold weather. Rain. We really didn't let that bother us, as we are busy making those Classy Moments at CMS.
