Emmet Senior Girls Start Season 2-2BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 8, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Emmet's Lady Eagles are 2-2 on the young season, as they have posted wins over Umpire and Genoa Central. The losses have been to Kirby and St. Joe. LADY EAGLES 35, KIRBY 56 The Lady Eagles got the season off to a slow start as the Lady Trojans handed them a 56-35 loss in game one. A cold first quarter was more than Emmet could overcome as the Lady Trojans went up 22-4 in the first eight minutes of the game. From there it was an uphill climb for the Lady Eagles. Halftime arrived with the score 38-20. The Lady Eagles got off to a slow start in the third quarter as they fell behind 56-28. However, Emmet's senior girls were able to hold Kirby scoreless in the final stanza. Amanda Hodges led the Lady Eagles with 13 points, while Amber Dougan contributed 10. Turner was the game's leading scorer for Kirby with 19. Garner added 13 more. The Lady Eagles were nine of 17 at the line, while Kirby hit 12 of 21. EMMET 22, ST. JOE 47 Eight points in the first half doomed the Lady Eagles against St. Joe's Lady Wildcats as they fell 47-22 and dropped to 0-2 on the season. The first quarter's four points by Emmet wasn't too bad as the Lady Cats only scored five. However, St. Joe took a 21-8 lead by halftime as the Lady Cats found their stroke in the second period. Emmet tried to battle back in the third quarter, but trailed 32-17 heading into the final eight minutes, where they were outscored 15-5. Hodges led Emmet with seven, with Dougan next scoring six. EMMET 40, UMPIRE 28 The Lady Eagles got things turned around when they tangled with Umpire and posted a 40-28 win. Emmet again found itself on the short end of a 13-11 first quarter score. However, the Lady Eagles took the lead at halftime, 22-17, and never looked back. The third quarter saw Emmet extend its advantage to 30-21. Hodges again led the Lady Eagles with 15 points. Dougan followed with eight. Ashley Krantz led Umpire with nine. The Lady Cats scored most of their points from beyond the arc, as Umpire hit six treys on the night. Emmet improved its free throw shooting by netting eight of 11, while Umpire was only able to convert four of 10. EMMET 43, GENOA 36 The Lady Eagles evened their record at 2-2 with an impressive win over Genoa Central's Lady Dragons, 43-36. For the first time this season, Emmet held the lead at the end of one, with the score 10-4. The Lady Eagles maintained their advantage at the break with the score 18-11. Genoa fought back in the second half, cutting the lead to 26-24 at the end of three, before being outscored 17-12 in the fourth period. Hodges once again paved the way for the win with 15 points, while Rose Martin contributed 10. Sarah Thane was Genoa's leading scorer with 12. Emmet hit 10 of 18 from the charity stripe, while the Lady Dragons were seven of 13. SENIOR BOYS Emmet's senior boys took it on the chin against the St. Joseph's 80-29. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead against the Eagles, leading 23-5 after the first period, and held a 44-13 lead at the half. Two free throws were all the offense Emmet could generate in the third quarter, while the Cats added 16 to their total to increase their advantage to 60-15. Jim Faulkner led the Eagles with 14 points. EMMET 57, KIRBY 75 Kirby's Trojans ambushed the Eagles Oct. 17, with a 75-57 win. Again, Emmet found itself trailing at the end of the first period, as the Trojans led 19-9. Halftime saw the lead extended to 38-25. The situation didn't improve for the Eagles in the third period, as Kirby stretched its lead to 52-37. Once again, Faulkner had the hot hand for the Eagles, ripping the cords for 31 points. Chris White added an even dozen for Emmet as well. EMMET 61, GENOA 99 Genoa's Dragons were plenty hot and steamed into Emmet to cook the Eagles 99-61. Emmet, 0-3 on the young season, found itself on the wrong end of a 19-13 score at the end of one, but fought gamely to stay close in the first half. At the break, Genoa was up 43-34. However, a cold third quarter by the Eagles, while the Dragons were fired up, was more than the host team could overcome. At the end of three the Dragons held an 81-41 lead.
